• Rocky Canyon Hot Springs features a series of cascading soaking pools on the far side of the river
• The hot springs are accessible only by fording the river
Rocky Canyon Hot Springs offers a stunning backcountry soaking experience in the Rocky Canyon along the Middle Fork of the Payette River in Boise National Forest, featuring a series of primitive, cascading pools located on the far side of the river.
Although the trailhead is just 13 miles from the town of Crouch, located off Middlefork Road, reaching the hot springs can still be challenging — it requires fording the river, which can be difficult even when water levels are low. The best time to visit is usually in late summer or early fall, but even then, uses extreme caution when crossing, especially with children or pets.
There are no amenities at the hot springs. The nearest facilities are at Hardscrabble Campground, 1.5 miles away, and in Crouch, 13 miles from the site.
The site is accessible via Middlefork Road, which is typically closed to vehicles during winter and often remains impassable through April 15, sometimes into May, due to snow.

Rocky Canyon Hot Springs Experience
Hot mineral water comes out of a source at 115°F - 120°F, depending on the season. It emerges atop the hill and flows down toward the river, cooling as it goes.
Hillside pools: Built by volunteers, these three cascading rock-and-sand pools are the hottest. In summer, lower pools measure around 105°F, while upper ones run even hotter.
River pools: Located at the water’s edge, these are much cooler. You can always mix in river water to adjust the temperature to your comfort.
The water flows in a multi-tier waterfall, creating a natural shower effect as it tumbles into each pool—perfect for relaxing in a truly wild setting.
Swimsuits are recommended since the pools can be visible from the road.
