• Fire Crew Hot Springs is a primitive soaking spot on the Middle Fork Payette River
Tucked along the Middle Fork of the Payette River in Boise National Forest, Fire Crew Hot Springs offers a primitive soaking experience with easy roadside access.
As the name suggests, this spot was once favored by wild land firefighters after long, grueling days. Today, anyone can enjoy the rejuvenating benefits of its geothermal mineral water—no firefighting required.
Access is easiest from spring through fall. Middlefork Road, which leads to Fire Crew Hot Springs, is typically groomed for snowmobile use and closed to wheeled vehicles through April 15—and sometimes into May, depending on snow conditions.
Fire Crew Hot Springs is a rustic location with no amenities. The nearest services are in the town of Crouch.
Fire Crew Hot Springs Experience
Geothermal water around 128°F emerges from several spots along the riverbank and flows toward the river. Volunteer-built rock-and-sand soaking pools capture the flow. However, seasonal runoff often washes them out, and visitors rebuild them each year.
Before entering the pool, check the water temperature—it can be too hot for comfort in summer. Bringing a bucket to add cold river water can help balance the heat.
Beyond Hot Springs: Other Adventures
Middle Fork of the Payette River offers excellent rockhounding and gold panning opportunities, along the riverbank and in the water—quartz and agates are common finds here. The river is also a fantastic fishing spot, particularly for trout.
Beyond soaking, you can enjoy nature viewing, wildlife watching, and hiking on the many scenic trails in Boise National Forest. Several campgrounds nearby also make it easy to extend your stay and fully explore the area.
