• Downata Hot Springs is a resort with mineral pools, water slides, and a water playground
Downata Hot Springs is a well-developed resort located near Downey, in the southeastern corner of Idaho. The resort offers a wide range of amenities, lodging options, and access to outdoor adventures in the surrounding area.
The spring water was used by local Mormon settlers long before the site was developed for soaking.
In 1907, the Marshall family purchased the ranch and built the first pool. Later, the Evans family joined them, and together they constructed the full resort in the winter of 1929.
Over the years, the resort has been operated by several families. Today, it is managed by multiple owners who have made major improvements, including new flooring, an upgraded sewage system, campground enhancements, and much more.
You can come for a short soak or stay overnight at the hotel or campground. However, please note that the resort is closed on Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays during the winter and spring seasons.
Downata Hot Springs Experience
Geothermal mineral water flows from the source at 112°F (44°C) and is piped into three outdoor pools, three enclosed waterslides, and a children’s water playground.
The swimming pool stays between 85°F and 99°F (29°C – 37°C) in summer, and 95°F to 101°F (35°C – 38°C) in winter. The hot soaking pool ranges from 102°F to 106°F (39°C – 41°C) and is divided into two sections, both with soothing jets and night lighting.
Kids can splash and play safely in the water playground, while adults can relax or even book a massage at the spa.
Swimwear is required at all times, as Downata is a family-friendly resort.
In the summer months, Red Cross-certified classes are offered, including swimming, lifeguarding, water safety instruction, CPR, and senior swim sessions.
Beyond Hot Springs: Other Adventures
If you get hungry, grab a bite at the snack bar near the pool or sit down for a meal at the on-site restaurant. Downata offers weekday “meal & soak” deals, making it easy to relax and dine affordably. In the warmer months, pool party packages are also available—great for groups and celebrations.
During summer, you can go hiking, bird watching, or take an ATV excursion at Oxford Peak.
During winter, you can enjoy snowmobiling and other snow-season adventures.
Downata Hot Springs Camping & Lodging
You can book a house, cabin, or yurt right at the resort. There’s also a developed campground with RV and tent sites, tepees, and a fun Cowboy Hangout area.
Keep in mind that the campground experiences a water shortage from mid-October through May, so plan accordingly. Some lodging options are pet-friendly, making it easy to bring your furry friends along.
