• Vichy Springs Resort is the oldest continuously operating hot springs resort in California
• It is also the only place in the US with naturally carbonated mineral water
Nestled in Mendocino County, just two hours north of San Francisco, Vichy Springs Resort is truly unique for several reasons. It's the only place in North America with naturally warm, carbonated mineral water—bubbly, healing, and safe to drink, like that of Vichy, France.
Guests can enjoy mineral baths, a large swimming pool, a classic hot tub, scenic hiking trails, cozy rooms and cottages, and a complimentary (and delicious!) breakfast buffet for overnight stays.
Vichy Springs Resort is the oldest continuously operating hot springs resort in California. Since 1854, people have traveled here to bathe in the unique "Champagne" mineral waters, surrounded by a serene landscape of oak, madrone, fir, and pine forests, along with open meadows and quiet creeks.
The original 1850s bathhouse still stands on the bank of Sulphur Creek, nestled within the resort’s expansive 700-acre private reserve. There's a sense of stepping back in time—yet with all the comforts you want.
If you're seeking an authentic hot springs experience with a touch of history, this is the spot.

Vichy Springs Resort Experience
The Vichy experience goes beyond bathing in mineral water. It combines relaxation, a hidden getaway, breathtaking nature, and stepping back in time.
The natural mineral water at Vichy Springs emerges from deep underground at a steady 90°F (32°C), offering a truly unique experience. Naturally carbonated, it’s the only place in North America where you can bathe in authentic “Champagne” mineral waters. The water is also safe to drink, with a dedicated faucet available for filling your glass or bottle. Rich in minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, and bicarbonate, this rare spring water is both refreshing and beneficial.

Vichy Springs Pools
The historic bathhouse with "Champagne" mineral baths is the heart of the resort. It includes 10 covered and four outdoor tubs, all kept at a consistent 90°F. These gently warm waters flow through a unique 1860s standpipe system. You should pull the pipe and return it to the drain to fill a tub.
Millions of natural bubbles fizz around your skin, stimulating circulation and deep relaxation. The bathhouse is a quiet zone, perfect for peaceful bathing - just as Mark Twain and Jack London once did here. With over a century of visitors, including many notable figures, the place carries a rich and timeless atmosphere.
The hot tub is kept at 104°F year-round. The heated spring water, treated with bromine, is perfect for warming up and unwinding in any season.
The Olympic-size swimming pool, built in 1880, is 3 to 8 feet deep and filled with salt-treated spring water. It's solar-heated and best enjoyed in late spring, summer, or early fall.

Beyond the Hot Springs: Other Adventures
One of my favorite things to do at Vichy Springs—besides soaking—is exploring the resort’s vast private nature reserve. With several marked hiking trails for all levels, there’s something for everyone. Looking for a bit of adventure? Here are a few trails to check out:
- Waterfall Trail: 30 minutes one way, leading to a lush, misty 40-foot waterfall. Amazing photo spot!
- Vista Point Trail: 30 minutes one way with panoramic views of Ukiah Valley and the surrounding hills.
- Cinnabar Mine Trail: 90 minutes one way where you can see the old mine shaft and walk through wildflower meadows.
- Loop Trail: 30-minute hike, great for a morning stroll through woods and fields.
- Pond Creek Trail: 20 minutes of short, peaceful walk by the creek.
I saw deer, wild turkeys, and lots of birds during my exploration. If you're into nature, you'll love it.
